warm and sunny

I can't keep up with the weather, just went out and picked the first vegtable from my garden this spring. One radish. Part of our spend less, trying to grow some of our own, started a "square foot" garden.

so going to make a salad for dinner tonight, not sure what kind yet.

cold and rainy

It is cold and rainy on the dc area today, (not really raining but looking like it is going to rain) so I am making soup again, I know I won't be making in the months to come with summer around the corner.

Tonight is french onion soup. (2 of my kids won't eat it but one does).

Nothing more Julia than that.

Angie and Julia

So I was watching Julie and Julia last night and saw myself.... sort of. I love Julia Child, had met her at a book signing long ago, have several of her books, and made a few of her recipes. But as a busy mom of 3 I wish I had done more. So the movie inspired me.

I also can't stand the rising prices at the grocery stores trying to feed my family and they all say if you make the dinner it is cheaper so I am going to try to do both. Make meals for my family that cost less and feed my soul by making some of the things I have always wanted to try. I may still rant about the government and economy (spent 6 years in a Ph.D. economics program at the University of Pennsylvania in my youth) but for the most part I am going to focus on what I can do. Feed my family - wonderful food that hopefully will cost less. enjoy.

Here is my take on Julia's Potato Leek Soup

2 cups chopped onions and leeks
2 cups chopped potatoes
4 T butter
4 T flour
6 C water

Saute the onions and leeks in butter for about 5 min. till soft. Stir in flour to make a kind of rouge for a few min (med/low heat). Add potatoes, water and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil , reduce to simmer and cook 45 min. I run my stick blender through it at this point ( could puree in a blender or food processor or food mill) test for seasoning. Now Julia would add heavy cream at this point and I do sometimes, but it doesn't need it. It is a wonderful soup that my family loves.

Hope yours does to. Thanks

are we next?

Our stock market fell 1000 points in a few mins. and it wasn't a mistake as some had suggested. Greese is on the minds of people who understand what that much debt can do to a country and we are headed that way fast.

What to Spend Your Money On and who will be paying it Back

In the news today - Should we have a new stimulus plan?
Should we pay for health care for everyone?
Should we bail out.... pick a private company in trouble?
Should we go to mars? build a colony on the moon?
These days it seems like we are spending your money faster than ever before. If you have a teenager or younger child when they work in the future.... how much of their pay checks are going to be paying for the choices congress makes today?????

Right now it seems like they are proposing new taxes on everything, engery usage in your home, the soda you drink, your cocktail, and always your paycheck - your salary and now your medical benefits. So how much of our kids paychecks will they get to keep?

I wrote both of my senators today.... I want them to read any health care bill before they sign it. Even if they do read it.... no one will know for sure how much it will cost our children , but I think that is that is the least they can do.
